ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has directed the federal and provincial governments to immediately plant trees along rivers and canals and complete the construction of the new Gaj Dam as soon as possible.
According to details, a two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed heard the case of construction of new Gaj Dam in the Supreme Court.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court said that cultivation cannot be done on raw land along rivers, no trees should be planted along rivers and canals, at least 6 feet of trees should be planted to make it safe.

The Additional Advocate General launched the Baya Government Nebulae Tree Tsunami Project, on which the Chief Justice said that there was talk of forests along rivers and canals, and the Shisham trees were wiped out in Punjab.
The Chief Justice inquired about the construction of the new Gaj Dam, to which the Joint Secretary Pani Bijli said that the ECNEC has not yet approved the PC-1 of the new Gaj Dam.
The court said that the new gauge dam is very important for securing water, adding that the federation and Sindh have agreed to build a new gauge dam.
The Supreme Court immediately directed the federal and provincial governments to plant trees along the rivers and canals and demanded a progress report on tree planting from all the governments within a month.
The court also stopped cultivation on uncultivated land along the rivers while seeking timeline from the federation and Sindh for construction of new gauge dam and directed to complete the construction of new gauge dam soon.
