KABUL: A bloody battle between Afghan security forces and the Taliban has broken out in the eastern part of the war-torn country, killing 65 Taliban fighters, while peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban are ongoing.
Fresh fighting between the Taliban and Afghan security forces took place last night in the Wazi Khiwa district of the eastern province of Paktika. The Taliban had earlier stormed the Afghan army headquarters building in the district.
Shah Mohammad Arain, a spokesman for Paktika Province, told reporters that Afghan forces had retaliated against the Taliban, inflicting heavy casualties.
He said 65 Taliban fighters were killed and 35 wounded in the clash, while unfortunately three policemen were martyred and six wounded. Bakhtiar Gul Zadran, head of the Paktika provincial council, confirmed the report, but the Taliban No statement has been issued about.
A day earlier, the Taliban claimed to have killed 28 paramilitary police in Afghanistan's southern province of Uruzgan, according to a foreign news agency.
Talks are underway between Afghan government representatives and the Taliban in Doha, the capital of Qatar, but so far no significant progress has been made and the parties have not been able to agree on any agenda for the talks. It started in September and is slowly progressing.
